Anambara police representative DSP Tochukwu Ikenganyia has addressed occupants to assist track down the unknown gunmen attacking police officers and stations in the State.
This, he said while explaining to BBC Igbo how unidentified gunmen attacked and killed a state police officer on Thursday.
DSP Ikenganyia said the incident was a serious matter that touched the Anambara state police.
He said; “It was around 4pm when the attackers attacked our officers at Okacha Road in Neni sub-county in Anaocha sub-county.”
Ikenganyia said the men in a Sienna car and motorcycle started firing as they arrived at the scene of the police operation.
“More than 20 criminals in three Sienna cars and motorcycles clashed with police for 30 minutes before other police officers came in to help the gang members flee.”
However, it turned out that two police officers were injured, one of whom later died at the hospital.
DSP Ikenganyia said he did not know how the attack in Awkuzu took place but said it was the navy that was affected.
A report from Awkuzu explained that three naval personnel were killed as the gunmen attacked them.
The attack is the latest in a series of attacks since people began attacking police and military since October 2020 as the EndSars protests unfold.
DSP Ikenganyia appealed to the Anambra people to turn their backs on the police to ensure that the need is not met.
