Rev. Fr. Ejike Camillus Anthony, Ebenezer Mbaka is a Catholic Priest of Enugu Dioceses. He is the Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish GRA Enugu and the founder and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries Enugu Nigeria (Amen).
Father Mbaka is by birth from the noble family of late Chief Humphrey Ogbuefi and Felicia Mbaka in Amata Ituku in Awgu L.G.A of Enugu State. Ogbuefi Mbaka’s family is renowned for their special talent in palm wine tapping in the community (Ituku). his father was an idol worshipper that was even a dibia (native doctor).
Being the only son of the parents his birth was greeted with full encomium and thanksgiving to God. This Special gift to Mbaka Family was named Ejike perhaps in realization of the fact all powers belong to God including that of sex determination.
With the arrival of the new born, his father late Pa Ogbuefi heaved a sigh of relief that at last his successor has arrived. Little did he know that his little infant prodigy had a different covenant with his creator. Right from infancy, the tiny Mbaka, though fully consumed by his domestic chores, still spared enough time to commune with God.
He assisted the beloved mother in the kitchen and other domestic duties, accompanied his father to their famous business of wine tapping and ensuring that all that was tapped was sold except the one reserved to entertain their daily visitors.
Once through with the home demands the little Mbaka would quickly ran out to organize their Block Rosary Prayers where he usually assumed the role of Francisco (one of the three children visited by Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima in Portugal in the year 1917) He was also deeply involved in the rejuvenation of Charismatic group in St. Anthony’s Parish Ituku where he led the prayer warrior team. His unassuming nature, great sense of humility and piousity endeared him to the entire Christian Community in Ituku.
At home he was equally loved pampered and generously taken care of for his docility, zeal and dedication to his domestic responsibilities. His father though a pagan at that time cautiously tolerated his local runs in the Christian activities in the town, but as soon as “Cami” declared his desire to join the priesthood the story changed drastically. Pa Ogbuefi and his kinsmen not only opposed the idea but also persecuted their little boy and made life one miserable experience for him.
One can pathetically understand his father’s position at the time because as the only son the news of his priesthood quest was tantamount to obituary, that is to say (that) the young man was perpetually lost with the irredeemable consequences of foreclosing their linage (in igbo culture) Ejike was therefore made to pay dearly for his supposedly act of obstinacy and insubordination.
Determined, he remained unruffled, undaunted, and resolute to the divine call to serve his creator. After his secondary school education at St. Vincent’s secondary school Agbogugn in Awgu L.G.A of Eungu state, he proceeded to Seat of Wisdom Seminary Owerri and St Joseph’s Ikot Ekpene for his training, and nurturing to priesthood. For want of space his testimony filled life in the seminary schools and the subsequent apostolic works activities and exploits are better consigned to history.
In 1995, precisely on July 29th, Rev. Ejike Mbaka was ordained a priest of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. This historic event marked the triumph of light over darkness to the glory of God. Instantly, the Catholic Church in Nigeria knew that the eagle has landed.
The young Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka was posted to the Holy Ghost Cathedral, the headquarters of Catholic Church in Enugu Diocese as the Assistant Diocesan Administration. He not only distinguished himself as a seasoned administrator but also gave the church in Enugu diocese the long desired apostolic spice and fillip to forge ahead.
This was a welcome response to the church longed for radical shift from the business as usual ways of doing things and celebrating the Eucharist for her people. This request was duly answered by the arrival of this budding priest as the anointing in him overflew and lubricated all that came in contact with him. People discovered something very special in this young priest and followed him to wherever he went. His office hours at the cathedral expectedly became a beehive of activities as the crowd continually besieged him with one spiritual problem or the other.
MBAKA’S POLITICAL LIFE.
IN January 2015, Mbaka Condemn Goodluck Jonathan, endorses Buhari, said Goodluck has become a Badluck to Nigeria.
In a new year message to his flock, at the Adoration Ground in Enugu, eastern Nigeria, Mbaka said the Holy Spirit told him that Nigeria is at the brink of change, following the bad leadership provided in the last six years by President Jonathan.
According to Mbaka, Goodluck leadership of Nigeria has turned into a national bad luck. The theme of his message was: From Good Luck to bad Luck.
“Goodluck met our oil, it turned to bad luck. He met our Naira, it became bad luck. We need change. Christmas that ought to be Goodluck Christmas became bad luck Christmas, he said, to the applause of thousands of people who attended the open air event.“
After Buhari won the Election in 2015, Mbaka visited Buhari, says Buhari is the one that will move Nigeria forward but since then, it seems Nigeria got worse under Buhari, from 2015 – 2019, Mbaka did not complain about Buhari, yet he keep telling his congregants that Buhari is God sent and would bring change to Nigeria. Meanwhile Buhari Government made so many promises to Mbaka, including funding the Adoration health centre.
During 2019 Election, Mbaka Condemned Peter Obi and Atiku, endorses Buhari for a second term despite the challenges in the country.
Mbaka also help Uzodinma become Governor whom they refer as supreme court Governor, but recently Mbaka Lamented that Uzodinma he put in power is no longer picking his calls.
Following the Hardship, killings, economic challenges in the country, and attacks on Police stations, prisons by unknown Gunmen of which the Governor of Imo, Uzodinma alleged that IPOB is Behind the attacks, Mbaka condemned Buhari for failing Nigerians, blesses Nnamdi Kanu for protecting his people especially forming ESN (Eastern security Network).
This Triggered lots of Reactions, Buhari Govt also fired back and threatened to exposed Mbaka. Hours later, Enugu catholic Bishop Callistus Valentine Onaga Detained Mbaka for 2 days, suspends him for a month, threatens to expel him if he continues to critisize Buhari and support Nnamdi Kanu. After protests by Enugu youths which led to the atack on the Bishop’s house, Mbaka was released.
In Reaction, Mbaka while addressing his parishioners after his release, at the adoration ground in Umuchigbo Nike, Enugu, said the Catholic Bishop had planned to keep him for 30 days before finally sending him to the Vatican.
He also disclosed that his major offence was the blessing he pronounced on the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu as well as his recent verbal exchange with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
He said a lot of issues were presented against him after which the Church leadership, led by Onaga told him that he would remain indoors for one month, a period that would allow him pray and meditate over his activities.
The priest said he requested to be allowed the opportunity to come and address his parishioners after which he would shut down, “but they said ‘No’. ‘Allow me to go and celebrate Mass for my people just for today; I won’t even tell them that I am being punished; they said, No. I will just tell my members that I’m going for 30 days prayer, that after 30 days, we will come back and everybody will obey, they said, No’.
“I also begged them to appoint another priest to come and celebrate mass for you today; they also said No.
“They didn’t treat me in a pastoral way. I was asking ‘am I being punished for what’?
“They said it was a meeting, but even before I reached the Bishop’s house, conclusion had already been made. “What happened to me was like the day I was shot on the road.
“Unfortunately for them, even before the meeting, a woman was already going around bragging that the Bishop will call me for a meeting, and that I was going to leave my house here for 30 days, and that after the 30 days, I would be sent to Rome, and Adoration Ministry will be closed.
Mbaka cautioned that “in a time and cases like this, don’t give me a punishment that will cause troubles for us because I’m not alone.”. He added.
Now, The question is; If mbaka is sacked as a Catholic church where will he go, what will he do?
Some say Mbaka if suspended from catholic church may get married and turn into a Pastor.
